Burton
in Lonsdale Village Shop and Post Office is one of the 150
Community owned shops in England. In 2005 the village formed
a co-operative to buy the shop. A board of trustees was set
up to seek funding and to oversee development. Thanks to local
generosity, grants, and encouragement from the Plunkett
foundation and DEFRA
and the Tridos bank the village took over the keys to the
shop in March 2005. After a period of refurbishment reopened
its doors on 4 April 2005. The shop is co-managed by three
members of the community, Gail, Guy and Marie supported by
trusty band of volunteers..
Today
the shop is a thriving meeting place for the villagers and
visitors who gather for a cup of tea, or soup in the winter
and catch up on village events (gossip!). There is something
for everyone in the village shop from good quality local produce,
Limestone
Country Beef, Mansergh
Hall organic meat, Udales pies, pattes and air dried ham;
Free-range eggs;vegetables, Suma foods, to bread and croissants
from our own bread oven. If you are coming on holiday or for
the weekend ring through your food order before you arrive.
In 2008
the Village Shop won
best rural retailer in NW award. Tom Fell, leader of the
North West Regional judging panel commented, This shop
is testament to what a community can do for itself. A community
run enterprise, saved from closure by the village and only
open for two and a half years, Burton Village Shop is without
question the heart of the village."
The Village
Shop Association was also awarded £5600 by the Lottery
' Awards
for All' for a project to promote and celebrate local
food - so if you haven't tried come and taste our local bacon
and organic food and Gail's famous soups and cakes.
Other

made on the premises.
