All Saints Church

The church (architects Paley and Austin) was built in 1870. It was paid for by Thomas Thornton, and is on the site of his grandparents' cottage, next to the Village Green. Burton in Lonsdale parish is in the Bradford diocese. The first Vicar of Burton was the Rev. Frederick Binyon (1866-74), father of the poet Lawrence Binyon (1869-1943), remembered for the lines quoted at Remembrance Day services from his poem 'For the Fallen'.

After a period of fundraising the church clock chimes have now been restored and work has now commenced on the roof.

The current Priest in Charge is the Reverend Chris Low, telephone 015242 61579. In 2007 Chris spent a period in Northern Sudan and has since been fundraising for the provision of basic educational materials and facilities for children in the area. To date (Jan 08) Chris has helped raise £900. Further information on Chris's Sudan visit can be found here.
